In January 1946 Jack married Celia (Smith),and left the Navy in June. This must have been Jack's first business adventure set up at some point between then and December when the first advert was placed in the Jewish Chronicle. However it was destined not to last long. Jack explained to us that due to the paper shortage at the time magazine and book publishing were very restictive making it impossible to continue. The UK faced a prolonged paper shortage during and after World War II, which continued to have a significant effect in 1948. The shortage stemmed from disrupted imports, wartime demands, and a slow postwar economic recovery. Paper rationing and strict controls, first introduced during the war, remained in place well into the late 1940s. The No 48 Paper Control Order, meant all paper allocation was tightly regulated by the government. The shortage made it difficult for authors to get books published. Even wrapping paper for most goods was prohibited. The government’s rationing of newsprint and other paper products meant that magazines faced strict limitations on the amount of paper they could use. This resulted in reduced frequency of publication for many periodicals. Decreased page counts, with some magazines forced to publish thinner issues or combine multiple issues into one. The shortage and rationing led to a contraction in the magazine market. Some periodicals, especially smaller or specialized ones, struggled to survive or suspended publication entirely. |
